Sunshine Region Perpetual Trophies
April 23, 2010

Dear Fellow Sunshine Region Pony Clubbers, Parents and friends,

Traditionally we have awarded all the End of Year Perpetual Awards at Eventing Rally. This year we
changed the rally order so the last one was Show Jumping Rally. The Award presentations were divided
between the two rallies. We are proud to announce the 2010 winners, with a brief explanation of what
they represent, as follows:

1. The Tammy Becker Memorial Trophy is given to the Beginner Novice individual with the best
Dressage score at Eventing Rally. Tammy was a sixteen year old D level Pony Clubber in the late
1960s. She was traveling to a rally with a horse trailer and two teammates, hit a train embankment and
was killed along with her horse. Her mother donated the trophy in her memory. The 2008 winner was
Rachel W., 2009 was Sidney W.; and the 2010 winner is Noel B.of Bay Leaf Pony Club.

2. The John R. Callaway Memorial Trophy is awarded to the Novice Individual with the best
Dressage Score at the Eventing Rally. This trophy began in the 1970s as a silver plated bowl full of
names and has been replaced with a wooden plaque. It is engraved and kept by the winner for one year. At
the present time we have no information about Mr. Callaway. Shared by Vanessa R. and Jill P. in
2008, it went to Katherine K. in 2009. This year’s winner is Samantha K. of Wekiva Basin
Pony Club.

3. The St Croix Trophy is awarded to the Stable Manager on the team with the best Horse
Management score at Eventing Rally. This large wooden paddle was purchased in the mid eighties in
thankfulness for the Sunshine Region enabling the St Croix team to participate in their only rally,
Eventing. It was a daunting task to send a team to Florida from St Croix, but the Sunshine Region has
always facilitated the process, particularly in Stable Management. The paddle is to be kept by the winning
Stable Manager for one year. The 2008 winner was Rachel H. and the 2009 winner was Claudia
B.. The 2010 winner is Matt P. of Laurel Oaks Pony Club.

4. The Joan Ketcham Trophy, awarded to the Pony Clubber best exemplifying the Pony Club Spirit
at the Eventing Rally has also been replaced by an engraved wooden plaque. Joan Ketcham was the
founder and DC of the now defunct Sandspur Pony Club in Cocoa Beach. Joan was the RS of the
Sunshine Region from 1983 – 1986. She was the USPC Chief HM Judge in the seventies as well as a
National Examiner from 1970 – 1993. She chaired a number of USPC Committees including Horse
Management and National Testing Committees. Joan was a dynamic, much loved leader and mentor as
well as a champion of children and a proponent of the Pony Club motto, “A happy child on a happy
horse.” Joan passed away on October 2, 2009. The 2009 winner was Samantha K. and the 2010
winner is Amanda L. of Bay Leaf Pony Club
.

5. The Mary Angela Jaquith Sportsman of the Year Award is awarded to the most consistently
helpful individual at two or more of the following rallies: Dressage, Show Jumping, and Eventing.
The recipient is determined by vote of Pony Club members and Horse Management at Dressage, Show
Jumping, and Eventing Rallies. Mary Jaquith (1994‐ 2007) was preparing for her C1 rating and Show
Jumping Rally when helping with a horse, it reared and rolled over on her, causing her untimely death.
Mary loved Pony Club and had been an active member of Sea Fox Pony Club since 2002. She attended
most rallies, one summer camp, and the USPC Annual meeting in Kansas City with her mother, Debra,
who is DC of their club. Mary was always the first one to help others with a warm smile and kind words
of encouragement. She leaves behind her parents, Michael and Debra, two sisters and five brothers who
live in Nokomis. The first winner in 2008 was Erin F., followed by Lisa W. in 2009. The 2010
winner is Ashley C. of Fox Hollow Pony Club.

Thank all of you for being such fine examples of proper Horse Management, safe riding and helpful Team
Spirit. You are our future leaders and we are very proud of you! Keep up the good work.

Sincerely,

Debra Jaquith
